When I wake, the first thing I remember is Steel. We’re mated. His words, I fucking knew it. And I smile, because clearly, he did. All the times he’s said to me that my curse wouldn’t matter, that I would find the right person anyway.

As I fully wake, searching my mind and body, finding that new connection, the vital ribbon that twines through my body and soul, I pause, holding my breath as something else swells within me.

A darkness.

The darkness.

I swallow thickly, opening my eyes. Silver eyes meet mine. Hey, are you okay?

I grit my teeth, glancing from Steel to my sisters. They’re still asleep, slumped against each other. I climb carefully off the bed and make my way to the door, Steel following. I’m not sure, I respond.

Being a darkling doesn’t come with a rule-book or a handy how-to guide. I push the door open, bracing against the cold that takes my breath away. I should be with Ember or Scarlet, or maybe even in my wolf form to endure the freezing wind slicing through my warm jacket, but I have to find Chase. Or Sela. Someone who can confirm my suspicions.

Selene gave me my wolf and let me have my fated mate.

But am I still cursed? I slide my sleeve up to look at my mark, and my face falls. Well, that’s a tally in the ‘probably cursed’ column. This darkness that pulses inside me… I don’t know what else it could be.

‘Shade, what are you doing? It’s too cold.’ Steel’s warm hands rub at my shoulders.

‘I have to find—’ I turn and see Chase at the slaughter house, slicing up another snowcat. ‘Chase!’ I don’t know how he stands there in the cold without warmth, but I have to get to him. I dart up a rocky, slick incline, slippery with snow, nearly falling in my haste.

Steel grabs me around the waist. ‘Hey, what’s the matter?’

I don’t respond. I get to Chase. ‘The person you knew who was darkling curse,’ I pant out, ‘what happened to her? Did Sela cure her?’

Chase blinks at our sudden appearance, eying Steel. ‘Hello to you too.’ His gaze lingers. ‘So, you’re mates, hmm?’ He uses the same thin knife he showed me before, slicing away the snowcat’s soft, whitish fur. They would make nice gloves.

‘Yeah, we are.’ Steel reaches out, gently grasping my hand.

‘That’s lovely.’ Chase hangs up a strip of fur. ‘What can I do for you? Darkling curse, you said?’ His gaze falls to me. ‘You’re a complicated young lady, Shade. Why don’t you tell me what’s really going on?’ Chase plants his bloody hands on the counter. ‘I believe this conversation would be more informative if we were both honest.’

‘Can we go somewhere honest and warm?’ Steel’s teeth chatter. He eyes Chase. ‘How are you not a popsicle?’

The other shifter chuckles. He sticks his bloody fingers into his mouth and lets out a low whistle. ‘Some of us have developed the ability to start our shift, then slide back, creating the warmth without the actual change.
